World Water Day 2018 Focuses on “Nature for Water”

22nd March is World Water Day and this year UN-Water is focusing on exploring nature-based solutions to the water challenges we face in the 21st century.

World Water Day, on 22 March every year, is about taking action to tackle the world wide water crisis. UN-Water reports that today, 2.1 billion people live without safe drinking water at home; affecting their health, education and livelihoods.

Why Wastewater?

Globally, over 80% of all the wastewater from our homes, cities, industry and agriculture flows back to nature without being treated or reused – polluting the environment, and losing valuable nutrients and other recoverable materials.

Through the use of Nature Based Solutions (NBS) the overarching goal is to ensure availability, through sustainable management and practice, of safe water and sanitation for everyone.

Starting with human built reservoirs and dams to store water, irrigation and energy generation through to regulation of downstream river flows for both flood mitigation and river health the water cycle needs to be better managed. Effective sustainable wastewater treatment utilising appropriate technologies is the next step, be it advanced man-made sustainable biological systems or protected wetlands, so the treated water can recharge ground water resources or be reused.
